/var/log/Xorg.0.log for Fedora 20

Description of problem:
The GDM login screen only shows a couple of rectangles along with the mouse pointer.

This appears to be a nouveau problem.

I can log in to a text console after typing CTRL-ALT-F2. I can return to the odd GDM screen with CTRL-ALT-F1.

I can log in via GDM by typing blind. The resulting (default Gnome) desktop shows up as a few different rectangles.

By using nomodeset, I can use the computer with the VESA driver. But it is quite slow and cannot support the display's native resolution.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

xorg-x11-drv-nouveau-1.0.9-2.fc20.x86_64

OS: Fedora 20 x86_64 + updates.

Computer: HP Pavilion zv5000, AMD 64-bit processor, GeForce4 440 Go 64M display controller.

How reproducible:
100%

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install Fedora 20 (noacpi and nomodeset needed)
2. do updates
3. get rid of noacpi and nomodeset from kernel parameters in grub configuration
4. boot

Actual results:
GDM screen with a few rectangles and a mouse pointer and nothing else

Expected results:
normal GDM screen

Additional info:

This is like Bug 891954 "[NV17] GNOME shell unusable with nouveau driver" but that was reported against Fedora 18 and is about to be closed WONTFIX.

Fedora 11 continues to run on this hardware, and its nouveau works.

Xorg.0.log for run with kernel parameter "nouveau.noaccel=1"

When I add the kernel parameter "nouveau.noaccel=1" (and leave out "nomodeset"), the nouveau driver works.

Unfortunately, the gnome desktop is very very slow this way. I wonder if that is related to these lines in the Xorg.0.log:

[ 44.218] (II) AIGLX: Loaded and initialized swrast
[ 44.218] (II) GLX: Initialized DRISWRAST GL provider for screen 0

Are there any other experiments I should perform?

Comment 4 D. Hugh Redelmeier 2014-01-06 05:33:35 UTC
Using "nouveau.agpmode=0" does not fix the problem.

Comment 5 Benson Bear 2014-04-11 12:38:25 UTC
I found I could only get nouveau to load with acpi=ht on the kernel command lie in grub. Can you try that?

Comment 6 Fedora End Of Life 2015-05-29 10:20:58 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 20 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 20. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a Fedora 'version'
of '20'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora 20 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Comment 7 Fedora End Of Life 2015-06-29 14:12:12 UTC
Fedora 20 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2015-06-23. Fedora 20 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
