Description Jared MORGAN 2014-07-16 23:12:32 UTC
Description of problem:

Currently, when you get an errata notification, the email instructs you to do the following:

To learn how to disable this email for systems:

https://access.redhat.com/knowledge/docs/Red_Hat_Network/Reference_Guide/s1-sm-your-rhn.html#s2-sm-your-rhn-prefs

The problem is that when you load this link in the browser, there isn't a clear section heading that describes this easily for customers. You need to scroll all the way down to the bottom of that page and you are presented with Section "6.3.1. Your Account"

Clicking on that link takes you to the account management page. If you aren't familiar with it, it takes you a little while to figure out which area you need to go into to change errata notifications.

If you don't want to receive any notifications at all, the area that says:

"To opt-in to errata and system notifications, visit Classic Management notifications." doesn't suggest to me that I can actually disable notifications. Only activate notifications.

==Suggestion 1==

Create a procedure that helps customer work out how to change the frequency , or disable notifications completely if they want to.

Suggested procedure:

1. Load http://www.redhat.com/ in a browser.
2. Click Log In, and provide your Red Hat Account details.
Note: If you are already authenticated, click "Account Maintenance"
3. On the "Your Red Hat Account" page, click "Newsletter and Contact
   Preferences".
4. In the "Your Preferences" group, click "Errata Notifications".
5. Select the frequency to receive errata notifications.
6. Optional: To completely disable errata notifications:
   1. Click the link under the CLASSIC MANAGEMENT heading
   2. Clear the "Receive RHN email notifications" checkbox
   3. Click "Save Preferences" to stop receiving all errata notifications.

A potentially more fragile solution (because URLs change) would be to direct link to the Errata Notifications page, which would shorten the procedure to:

1. Load https://www.redhat.com/wapps/ugc/protected/notif.html in a browser.
Provide your Red Hat Account details if prompted.
2. Select the frequency to receive errata notifications.
3. Optional: To completely disable errata notifications:
   1. Click the link under the CLASSIC MANAGEMENT heading
   2. Clear the "Receive RHN email notifications" checkbox
   3. Click "Save Preferences" to stop receiving all errata notifications.

==Suggestion 2==

On the Errata Notifications page (https://www.redhat.com/wapps/ugc/protected/notif.html) change the text from:

CLASSIC MANAGEMENT:
To opt-in to errata and system notifications, visit Classic Management notifications.

to:

GLOBAL ERRATA NOTIFICATIONS:
To disable or enable all errata notifications from your registered systems, visit Classic Management notifications.

As you may already be aware, Red Hat is transitioning from the Red Hat Network (RHN) hosted interface to the Red Hat Subscription Management (RHSM) interface in July 2017. Red Hat has invested in and seen success from RHN for many years, and used that experience to build more robust technologies like RHSM.

If you have not yet migrated your RHN systems to RHSM or you are a Red Hat Satellite customer, please review the information from. https://access.redhat.com/products/red-hat-subscription-management#migration.

Since we are shutting down RHN, no further actions will be taken with this bug or enhancement request. You can find additional information at RHSM product page (https://access.redhat.com/products/red-hat-subscription-management). If you have further questions, please contact support (https://access.redhat.com/products/red-hat-subscription-management#support).
