Red Hat Bugzilla – Bug 1139308
Subscription Manager pool ID is listed as optional but really is not (doc and product issue)
Last modified: 2015-02-13 00:52:19 EST
In section 2.1.2.5. Installing the Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform Installer Step 6. Option 4. the subscription manager pool (optional) needs to not be optional, and we should have some more information here. They need to pull the pool id of the subscription they want attached to each system, when foreman sets it up. Without a valid subscription ID, puppet/foreman won't be set up and the installation will fail every time.
There is a documentation issue, most likely, but from a product perspective and a general code perspective, the issue listed here isn't quite true. The code runs subscription-manager with --auto-attach. If the default subscription a customer has includes RHEL-OSP, then things will work correctly. If it does not (the RH employee subscription doesn't), then they need to specify a pool id. moving to docs to incorporate this.
Reassigning to Andrew Dahms to sort out the docs component.

Reviewed. In the Subscription Manager step, '(optional)' has been changed to '(recommended)'. The table entry for 'subcription_manager_pool' explains clearly that specifying a pool ID is optional, but recommended. It also discusses the auto-attach behaviour. VERIFIED.
