Description Eelco Hoekema 2004-04-08 16:37:35 UTC
From Bugzilla Helper:
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.6)
Gecko/20040124 Epiphany/1.0.8

Description of problem:
I 've installed FC2T2 on an Asus A7v600. Install goes OK (allthough i
need to unplug all USB devices since loading the USB storage driver
hangs if i don't).
The first few times that i boot the system, it starts fine. But after
that, it allways stalls just after entering runlevel 5, probing for
new hardware, updating fstab.

In most cases, i get a kernel bug output as copied to the additional
information, but sometimes i don't. The error doesn't show in
/var/log/dmesg.

I made a picture of the screen, and retyped it myself (the last digits
of the stack are missing, but those are not visible on my screen -
need a smaller font, i guess):

How reproducible:
Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Install Fedora Core 2 Test 2
2.Boot/reboot a few times
3.Boot

Actual Results: Kernel bug (see additional information). Boot process
stops.

Expected Results: Regular boot.

Comment 3 Tino Meinen 2004-04-08 19:26:40 UTC
I just finished installing FC2t2 and i see the same bug.
(It consistently fails to boot for me however)

One question for Eelco: Did you perhaps make a typing error?
I get:
kernel BUG at fs/proc/generic.c:664! instead of
kernel BUG at dfs/proc/generic.c:664!

and I get:
sys_delete_module+0xfe/0x11e instead of
sys_delete_module+0xde/0x11e

Better change to a more discriptive summary title such as:
Kernel hangs a boot time: BUG at /fs/proc/generic.c

No, it is fs, not dfs. But nevertheless i can't rule out typo's, so
i've put up a picture of my screen at:

Changed title as proposed. Thanks.

I get this same problem, also with an Asus A7V600, but I get it every
boot, not just after the first few. Also, I didn't have to unplug any
USB devices to get it to install. That worked with no problem. I tried
booting into rescue mode, and played around with /etc/init.d/kudzu. It
seems to be freezing on the "action updfstab" line, and so I put in a
line before that which would run updfstab -t to just print out the
fstab it was trying to create, thinking that maybe it was hanging on
the writing step, but it stoped on the test as well. I tried the test
with and without the --skipprobe option and got the same results. So
if the problem isn't probing hardware, reading configs, or writing to
the /etc/fstab file, then I have no idea what it is, since that's
pretty much all updfstab does, as far as I know. I also tried
installing with SELinux set to enabled, set as warnings, and booting
with selinux=0, and that had no effect. I'm going to try spinning a
FC2T2 disk with the kudzu from test1 (kudzu-1.1.41-1) and see if that
does anything. I'll probably also try an FC2T2 disk with the
kernel-2.6.1-1.65.

One workaround seems to be pressing th 'I' for interactive startup,
and then press Y for everything but searching new hardware (Kudzu).
That way i managed to boot my machine, and i installed a newer kernel
from development (2.6.5-1.309).
With that kernel, it will boot. (But unfortunately, it won't start the
3Com network adapter that is on your board.)

Comment 7 Aaron VanDevender 2004-04-13 16:15:57 UTC
I started up in rescue mode and downgraded to kudzu-1.1.41-1 from test
1, and the restarted and everything booted normally, including the
3Com network adapter. Given Eelco's success in booting with a
different kernel seems to suggest that the problem isn't necessarily
with either the kernel or kudzu, but with the interaction between
them. I'll give kudzu-1.1.54-1 a try to see if things have improved
since test 2.

Comment 8 Eelco Hoekema 2004-04-13 17:28:11 UTC
I disabled the onboard LAN in the BIOS. After that, out-of-the-box
FC2T2 booted fine. To sum it all up, it will boot when you:
- downgrade kudzu
- skip kudzu
- upgrade kernel
- disable onboard LAN

Comment 9 Arjan van de Ven 2004-04-13 17:34:21 UTC
ok that's the sk98lin driver which has a bug ;(

Comment 10 Gene Czarcinski 2004-04-14 17:45:02 UTC
With kernel-2.6.5-1.322 installed on ASUS SK8V and Opteron 140,
problems with kudzu and sk98lin appear fixed.

Comment 11 Eelco Hoekema 2004-04-14 20:01:40 UTC
I can confirm Gene's observation about kernel-2.6.5-1.322. On my Asus
A7V600 the problems with sk98lin seem to be fixed as well.
