Probably internal X server problem.

- The result of xprop -root | grep XKB
- The result of gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/xkb

I'm seeing a similar problem today, 8 months after your report.
The system was OK until some update in the last few days.
What did you do to work around this?
does not happen anymore, I think.
