Is there a reson why you're using a mix of mate 1.8 and 1.10 packages?
And why not updating to mate-1.10?
mate-desktop-1.10.x package has changes with xrandr, for this reason mate-display-properties crashed if you use a mix of 1.8 and 1.10 packages.

Duplicate packages installed? Then it would be a broken installation that needs cleanup with e.g. the package-cleanup tool.
Sorry guys, I think I opened mate-control-center in the middle of an update, and that was the cause for the crash.
I'll let you know if it ever happens again. Thanks.
