Description Eli 2015-12-23 16:57:59 UTC
Description of problem:

Connecting and disconnecting my external monitor (HDMI), the computer adjusts the screen resolution automatically like it's supposed to, but the KDE status bar ("activity panel"?) sometimes does not show up. It appears that if I connect and reconnect, the system cycles through 4 distinct states, half of which are not what they should be.

- external monitor connected, bar on bottom of laptop screen -- good
- disconnect external monitor, it auto adjusts, bar on bottom of laptop screen -- good
- connect external monitor, auto adjusts, bar on bottom of external screen -- not desired
- disconnect external monitor, auto adjusts, bar is completely missing -- very bad
- reconnect external monitor, auto adjusts, bar on bottom of laptop screen -- good (and back to the initial state)

Continuing to plug and unplug the monitor cycles back through these same 4 states.
I'm not sure why, but sometimes the connect or disconnect isn't noticed by the system and I have to plug it back in to remove it again (or the reverse).

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
kde-settings-22-15.fc22.noarch

How reproducible:
very

Steps to Reproduce:
- external monitor connected, bar on bottom of laptop screen -- good
- disconnect external monitor, it auto adjusts, bar on bottom of laptop screen -- good
- connect external monitor, auto adjusts, bar on bottom of external screen -- not desired
- disconnect external monitor, auto adjusts, bar is completely missing -- very bad
- reconnect external monitor, auto adjusts, bar on bottom of laptop screen -- good

Actual results:

Expected results:

Additional info:
System76 laptop, i915 Intel integrated graphics
I've seen other weird graphics behaviors with varying levels of reproducibility which may or may not be related to this. Namely, for a while the menu that opens when you press Alt-F3 was showing only the shadow border, not the menu itself. That has inexplicably fixed itself though. Also, when I use the volume keys or the screen brightness keys, the little window notification that tells you what it's changing shows up as an empty box about the size of a checkbox.

I'm running the KDE spin.

I filed this against kde-settings, but I don't know if that is the correct component.
