Description Peter Larsen 2016-01-06 21:36:14 UTC
Document URL: https://docs.openshift.com/enterprise/3.1/install_config/install/prerequisites.html

Section Number and Name: https://docs.openshift.com/enterprise/3.1/install_config/install/prerequisites.html#prereq-dns

Describe the issue:

The pre-req section referred from the quickstart doesn't explain to a customer how to do a "quick start" DNS. For users who just want to try out OpenShift who may not be network experts, having a quick section on how to configure something like DNSMASQ or libvirt to support a DNS wild-card would help customers get started without needing CE/Pre-sales help.

Suggestions for improvement:

Add basic architecture for a quick-start installation with a single master and two nodes, and place a DNS service on a resource used by the install. For libvirt users, adding a simple file to /etc/NetworkManager/dnsmasq.d and using the local host file will satisfy the pre-req. VirtualBox and other virtualization solutions have similar quick ways of creating basic DNS.

The section should also have an "advanced" install that would explain how to do a full bind configuration with complete SOA records and named.conf examples.

The 3.6 guide provided a quick start that included some of this information. I am going to close this bug and if more information is required, please reopen.
