Description Giuseppe Allodi 2016-02-01 18:34:23 UTC
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:17.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/17.0
Build Identifier:

Seemingly, a hardware specific bug related to the GPU (Intel Atom Z36xxx/Z37xxx, pci vendor:product 8086:0f31) of my LENOVO E50-00 90 BX under Xwindow. Symptoms of increasing severity are:
1) Bugs in the kernel module (i915) are traced by ABRT (see attachment), although the system is still responsive;
2) The PC is no longer responsive to mouse and keyboard inputs after gdm times out waiting for loging (in other words, gdm no longer wakes up from sleeping/power saving mode), although the system is still alive (it can be rebooted by ssh);
3) The PC eventually hangs on intense and prolongued usage of the graphic interface (for instance, by playing a movie). The system is no longer alive (it does respond neither to ssh, nor to a shutdown scheduled by "at") and the crash is not traced.

Reproducible: Sometimes

Steps to Reproduce:
Normal user interaction with the desktop.

Actual Results:
Low-intensity usage of the desktop over hours often leads to warning messages in the system log relative to the i915 kernel module, seldom to a system hang.

Waiting for gdm to time out always leads to an unresponsive system to keyboard and mouse input.

Playing a movie (e.g. by mplayer), or a game (e.g. pingus) eventually hangs the system. There is no deterministic sequence producing the hang, but that occurs, on average, in twenty minutes.

The PC passes all the hardware tests provided by Lenovo.

Comment 4 Giuseppe Allodi 2016-03-02 16:40:00 UTC
I eventually downgraded my system to Fedora 21 (end of life, which ensures that the OS won't be updated to an unstable configuration) and applied the last updates, including kernel 4.1.x. My computer hasn't crashed ever since. I also tested the PC with live CDs of other distros based on similar Xorg versions (Ubuntu 14-4 LTS, Mint Rebecca) and they ran too without any crash. Apparently, the problem is related to the latest Xorg software ...

Comment 5 Fedora End Of Life 2016-11-24 15:20:18 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 23 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 23. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a Fedora 'version'
of '23'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora 23 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Comment 6 Fedora End Of Life 2016-12-20 18:22:35 UTC
Fedora 23 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2016-12-20. Fedora 23 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
