what are the permissions/ownership of the device?
File is mode 600, owned by the user currently logged in (as set by /etc/security/console.perms)
Additional note: I am thinking this bug (and https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=130864) may actually be kernel bugs in the ATAPI layer.
