Description of problem: I have an up-to-date Fedora 23 laptop with an i7-4700HQ and integrated 4th Gen intel graphics. (It also has a discrete nvidia graphics chip with nvidia optimus but that is not active). For the year and a half that I've owned this system I've run Fedora and gnome-shell on it and it's always been very snappy. After a recent update the gnome-shell performance has degraded significantly. E.g. everything feels sluggish, animations, such as the transition to the overview, only render a few frames. I don't have any extensions enabled. Other OpenGL applications render quickly (e.g. glxgears gives a framerate >2100fps). Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): gnome-shell-3.18.4-1.fc23.x86_64 kernel-4.4.5-300.fc23.x86_64 Additional info: I'm not sure what else would be helpful debugging info, but I'm happy to add info as requested. As can be seen in the below perf test, the frame rate is very low. $ gnome-shell-perf-tool --replace current session already has an ibus-daemon. ------------------------------------------------------------ # Time to switch to applications view, first time applicationsShowTimeFirst 3421991 # Time to switch to applications view, second time applicationsShowTimeSubsequent 2125061 # Additional malloc'ed bytes the second time the overview is shown leakedAfterOverview 8212544 # Frames rate when going to the overview, 10 alpha-transparent windows open overviewFps10Alpha 12.294225402328527 # Frames rate when going to the overview, 10 maximized windows open overviewFps10Maximized 12.718277436504 # Frames rate when going to the overview, 10 windows open overviewFps10Windows 11.441189426052732 # Frames rate when going to the overview, 5 alpha-transparent windows open overviewFps5Alpha 18.601190476190474 # Frames rate when going to the overview, 5 maximized windows open overviewFps5Maximized 17.73946054300489 # Frames rate when going to the overview, 5 windows open overviewFps5Windows 17.31894129311875 # Frame rate when going to the overview, first time overviewFpsFirst 10.410268689034863 # Frames rate when going to the overview, second time overviewFpsSubsequent 20.247833481817445 # Time to first frame after triggering overview, first time overviewLatencyFirst 411052 # Time to first frame after triggering overview, second time overviewLatencySubsequent 206337 # Malloc'ed bytes after the overview is shown once usedAfterOverview 36042992 ------------------------------------------------------------
This has something to do with these kernel updates: kernel-4.4.5-300.fc23.x86_64 kernel-4.4.4-301.fc23.x86_64 If I switch back to kernel-4.4.3-300.fc23.x86_64 everything is snappy again. Here are performance tests with 4.4.3 for comparison: (note, my monitor is 4k with 48Hz refresh rate). $ gnome-shell-perf-tool --replace current session already has an ibus-daemon. ------------------------------------------------------------ # Time to switch to applications view, first time applicationsShowTimeFirst 1126516 # Time to switch to applications view, second time applicationsShowTimeSubsequent 1038433 # Additional malloc'ed bytes the second time the overview is shown leakedAfterOverview 9445088 # Frames rate when going to the overview, 10 alpha-transparent windows open overviewFps10Alpha 30.120481927710845 # Frames rate when going to the overview, 10 maximized windows open overviewFps10Maximized 25.091269492779986 # Frames rate when going to the overview, 10 windows open overviewFps10Windows 32.75332650972364 # Frames rate when going to the overview, 5 alpha-transparent windows open overviewFps5Alpha 47.28877679697352 # Frames rate when going to the overview, 5 maximized windows open overviewFps5Maximized 31.746661640111903 # Frames rate when going to the overview, 5 windows open overviewFps5Windows 45.043016080356736 # Frame rate when going to the overview, first time overviewFpsFirst 47.00927022808898 # Frames rate when going to the overview, second time overviewFpsSubsequent 43.075260311629926 # Time to first frame after triggering overview, first time overviewLatencyFirst 70464 # Time to first frame after triggering overview, second time overviewLatencySubsequent 44743 # Malloc'ed bytes after the overview is shown once usedAfterOverview 36069264 ------------------------------------------------------------
This message is a reminder that Fedora 23 is nearing its end of life. Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 23. It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a Fedora 'version' of '23'. Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version. Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not able to fix it before Fedora 23 is end of life. If you would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above. Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete.
Fedora 23 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2016-12-20. Fedora 23 is no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug. If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this bug. Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
