Description cosama 2016-04-05 17:23:48 UTC
Description of problem:

Gnome software indicates that there is a firmware update (XPS 13 9350 System Update 66307) available, however clicking the restart & install button has no effect.

The update shows up in fwupdmgr, however, fwupdmgr verify produces:
a25f5a5e-f122-5824-9064-e1a9b5ebc956	FAILED: No metadata
33773727-8ee7-4d81-9fa0-57e8d889e1fa	FAILED: No version 0.1.515

"fwupdmgr update" fails with error -1.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

fwupd-0.5.4-1.fc23.x86_64

How reproducible:

Reload software update in Gnome software on that hardware (XPS 13 9350). The firmware update shows up, press the button "restart & install".

Actual results:

Pressing the "restart & install" button has no effect as, I assume, fwupdmgr is not capable of installing the upgrade.

Expected results:

Reboot and installation of firmware, or display at least an error message in gnome software, so that debugging is possible.

Additional info:

I think this bug is composed of two problems:
1) Gnome software has no mechanism to display error messages caused by fwupdmgr.
2) The two update packages are somewhat broken, or have insufficient meta data.

Comment 1 cosama 2016-04-18 16:54:12 UTC
The bug furthermore blocks me from installing any updates through "gnome software", as the button "restart & install" does nothing, so the only way of updating the system right now is through "dnf".

Comment 2 Richard Hughes 2016-06-28 07:41:04 UTC
If you do "sudo fwupdmgr update", what happens?

Comment 3 cosama 2016-07-13 16:50:02 UTC
Hi Richard,

Thanks for the comment. In the meantime I happened to upgrade the firmware through windows, so the message disappeared. Unfortunately, I can not check up on your proposition anymore.

If you prefer we can consider this bug as solved, or leave it open until there is a new firmware upgrade and I can see if the situation has changed.

Comment 4 Jason Birch 2016-09-05 00:42:39 UTC
Hi there.

I have yet to do the update, so here is my experience trying the above fwudpmgr invocation:

$ sudo fwupdmgr update
Downloading 0.1.4.4 for XPS 13 9350...
Updating 0.1.4.4 on XPS 13 9350...
 * Decompressing firmware
Retrying as an offline update...
 * Idle
 * Decompressing firmware
 * Scheduling upgrade
$

(I'll now reboot and then get back to you about how well it worked...)

Comment 5 Jason Birch 2016-09-05 00:51:15 UTC
No luck :) Rebooting left me with a black screen for a while. Hard resetting from then brought me back into Linux but still with the message to upgrade to FW 0.1.4.4.

Comment 6 Fedora End Of Life 2016-11-25 07:16:17 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 23 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 23. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a Fedora 'version'
of '23'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora 23 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Comment 7 Fedora End Of Life 2016-12-20 19:49:18 UTC
Fedora 23 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2016-12-20. Fedora 23 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
