Description of problem: It seems Satellite picked up a feature that has been added to foreman to auto-generate suggested names for hosts. This seems like a useful feature, however the names it generates are based on the 100 most common first/last names of people. Here are some examples: elisa-dostie emma-dansby ora-seling These seem to be odd names for hosts, and could be confusing to customers. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): Satellite 6.3 How reproducible: All the time Steps to Reproduce: 1. In the WebUI open the "New Host" dialog Actual results: A random name is autogenerated. Expected results: No name is generated and the user is expected to supply one. Additional info:
Hi Daniel, It looks like the behavior raised by this bugzilla was introduced upstream by http://projects.theforeman.org/issues/13768. What are your thoughts regarding the concern being raised?
The random name generator is a feature we meant for to create for 2 things: 1. Save time (when your hosts are cattle, you should not care about names) 2. Provide a default name that links hardware with hosts in Foreman. The entire rationale is written in https://github.com/lzap/deacon I do not believe we will be changing the default (we asked a good number of people upstream if you see the PR) and the response was overwhelmingly positive. We do have similar name generators in Openshift and Cloudforms, which can't even be disabled. This one can be easily disabled with a simple or changed via Administer > Settings - Provisioning tab - "Type of name generator" I'll close for the moment, please reopen if you have other concerns
