Description of problem: High CPU and GPU usage in a Powerful Machine There were also duplicate processes being launched by GDM these processes becomes CPU and GPU demanding over time CPU usage 24% on 32Threads CPU GPU usage 28% on Nvidia GTX 1060 6Gig These usage does not decrease over time, as if that part of the hardware is dedicated Processor: 2x Intel Xeon E5 2670 2.7GHz 8C/16T GPU: Nvidia GTX 1060 6Gig MB: Asrock EP2C602 4L/D16 Mem: 32G Samsung ECC Server type SDD: Samsung Evo 850 500G (Not the buggy Evo 840 of course) HDD: Hitachi 1T Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): How reproducible: Easy to Reproduce Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install The OS 2. Open Firefox, Open Nautilus, Terminal and so on 3. Wait, wait, check in top and Nvidia X server for CPU and GPU usage bump up Actual results: CPU usage 24% on 32Threads CPU Xorg use 24% CPU GPU usage 28% on Nvidia GTX 1060 6Gig Does not decrease over time Expected results: CPU usage 4% on 32Threads CPU Xorg 0% GPU usage 0% Additional info: Temporary workaround Add the ff. in the /etc/gdm/custom.conf [daemon] WaylandEnable=false Restart, then manually killing the duplicate process launched by GDM or More precisely kill the Xorg and gnome-shell GDM duplicate process. Do this every after restart. Kill them and system will be back to normal, no other thing gets affected when killing this duplicate process except if you did not add WaylandEnable=false. Results to 1. Not an XORG Bug, but more likely a GDM Bug 2. Fix CPU usage of xorg from 24% down to 0 - 0.7% 3. Fix GPU utilization from 28% to 0% 4. Huge improvements huh. This is not a solution and is clearly a GDM Bug. And you got to do manually kill those process every after restart.
This message is a reminder that Fedora 24 is nearing its end of life. Approximately 2 (two) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 24. It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a Fedora 'version' of '24'. Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version. Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not able to fix it before Fedora 24 is end of life. If you would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above. Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete.
Fedora 24 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2017-08-08. Fedora 24 is no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug. If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this bug. Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
