Description Frantisek Kluknavsky 2016-10-21 14:33:14 UTC
Description of problem:
Current systemd rpm has a lot of dependencies. One of the more striking examples is kmod depending in turn on udev. That makes container images with systemd huge with unnecessary data.

Any concrete numbers? Anyhow, systemd-udevd is now a subpackage in Fedora. I figure we could package it the same way for RHEL too.

dnf --installroot=somewhere install systemd -> 335M
(reported by du. size reported by yum -> 285M)
after removing locale and yum cache -> 235M
size of unpacked rhel base image -> about 200M
size of gzipped rhel base image -> about 70M
/etc/udev + /usr/lib/udev -> 12M
