Red Hat Bugzilla – Bug 139340
Hangs at first reboot
Last modified: 2015-01-04 17:12:14 EST
Description of problem:
After installation, reboot hangs at "Configuring kernel parameters:"
Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
Every boot after every installation
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install Fedora 3
Hangs at blinking cursor until reset or turn the computer off
Boot to Fedora 3
I had this same issue. I used my disc to do a rescue boot, then I
changed my run level from 5 to 3 in inittab and then rebooted. My
machine would then boot up fine, no problems. Once I got to the
prompt to startx it would then fail to start x. I am using the nvidia
driver, so I reinstalled the driver and it would then start x fine.
As long as I keep my runlevel at 3 everything is ok. If I change it
to 5 it will hang at Configuring Kernel Parameters and then I will
have to repeat the process described above, including reinstalling the

I do have an nVidia graphics card, but I don't exactly know what I am
doing. I was hoping to install & run Fedora 3 right from the discs, so
I've got some studying to do to figure out how to change my run level
and install the appropriate driver. Thank you for the clues.
I think I'm stuck. The nVidia web site doesn't have a Linux driver for
my chip (RIVA-128X). I installed Fedora Core 2 without major problems
and without installing a driver from nVidia. The installation worked
fine, with the GUI, up to the first boot.
Installing the new rhgb-0.16.1-1.RC3.i386.rpm appears to have fixed
this bug. I no longer hang at "Configuring kernel parameters."
But it appears that I can't use X: no screens found.
RIVA128 chip is the problem now.
I don't believe its your chip cause I have the same issue now as well
and I have a newer nvidia card. Once again, if I set my runlevel to 3
instead of 5 everything works fine.
