Description Dag 2016-11-23 20:54:42 UTC
Description of problem:
I use a trackball with only 2 buttons since years.
I used "xinput" to enable middle button emulation (clic right+left) and scroll by maintaining the emulated middle button pressed (maintain right+left).

So, now with Wayland : no middle button available anywhere.

The consequences :
- no middle button to fast copy/paste (terminal, anywhere else),
- no middle button to access menu in some software,
- no middle button to activate H/V scroll,
- no middle button to fast open URL in a new tab (Firefox),
- no middle button for anything ... and I use middle button for a lot of things, all day long.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
rpm -qa | grep wayland
libwayland-client-1.12.0-1.fc25.x86_64
libwayland-server-1.12.0-1.fc25.x86_64
xorg-x11-server-Xwayland-1.19.0-0.8.rc2.fc25.x86_64
mesa-libwayland-egl-12.0.3-3.fc25.x86_64
gnome-session-wayland-session-3.22.1-2.fc25.x86_64
ibus-wayland-1.5.14-3.fc25.x86_64
libwayland-cursor-1.12.0-1.fc25.x86_64
wayland-devel-1.12.0-1.fc25.x86_64
gnome-desktop3-3.22.1-1.fc25.x86_64

How reproducible:
Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. open a Gnome session with Wayland
2. try xinput trick to configure mouse : xinput does not work in Wayland,
3. try to find an option/ somewhere to activate middle button : there isn't any
4. try to find information on the web : libinput says it can do it, but it seems Gnome does not allow it.

Actual results:
I'm screwed : no middle clic possible.

Expected results:
There should be an option or software/tool to enable the middle clic, and configure buttons as xinput used to allow it.

Additional info:
I think a workaround is : open a Gnome session with Xorg (I did not try this yet as Wayland is the default now).

work around: Going back to Xorg works.
That's the only way for now :-(

I'm using xinput, just as I used to in Fedora 24.

This is still a severe shortcoming on F27 that prevents me from moving to Wayland.

I have both a Logitech Marble Mouse and Kensington trackballs with which to test.

I currently use the 'back' button on the Logitech as a middle button (rather than simulated middle-click) and also to enable scroll emulation. This works well under X with InputClass config

        Option "ButtonMapping" "1 8 3 4 5 6 7 2 2"
        Option "ScrollMethod" "button"
        Option "ScrollButton" "8"

The Kensingtons have a scroll collar but require ConstantDeceleration 4 and 2.6, and one has 4 buttons around the ball which I like to use with

        Option "ButtonMapping" "1 8 2 4 5 6 7 3"

Again - no means obvious or otherwise to configure these under Wayland.

Comment 4 Fedora End Of Life 2017-11-16 18:43:13 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 25 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 25. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a Fedora 'version'
of '25'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora 25 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Comment 5 James 2017-11-17 19:54:07 UTC
Reporter please bump the version to 27 -- Wayland is still completely deficient for trackball users.

Comment 6 Fedora End Of Life 2017-12-12 10:24:07 UTC
Fedora 25 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2017-12-12. Fedora 25 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.

Comment 7 Dag 2017-12-28 09:49:41 UTC
There is still no way to properly configure mouse/trackball/whatever input device buttons as xinput used to allow it.

I'm still stucked with Xorg...
