Description Igor Saggese 2016-11-24 09:33:50 UTC
Description of problem:
I recently got a new Dell XPS13 9360 with Kaby Lake chipset and currently Fedora 25 is installed. Everything seems to be working flawlessly for the moment except for some issues with HDMI output through USB-C adapter.
When I connect my Samsung TV monitor to the computer through it (my XPS13 has only a Thunderbolt3/USB-C port for video out) colors on external display are very strange, they look like a 16-bit palette is used, so monitor is unusable (HDMI audio is fine).
I've tried to connect to another Samsung TV monitor (different model) with the same result.
I've tried also on a Toshiba TV and there it works correctly (maybe there is a problem specific to Samsung TV monitors?).
This problem seems to happen only if Samsung TV is already on when I connect it: if I turn it off, connect to XPS and then power TV on it works correctly (until I change some display settings... after that I get strange colors again).
If I connect to same monitor through USB-C to VGA it works correctly.
The adapter is not faulty since it works correctly with Windows 10 in the same TV-XPS setting.

Here it is the output of journalctl command after plugging in the adapter when Samsung TV is already on (if i plug it in when it is off i don't get all those permission denied and file not found errors):

I have the same hardware setup as the original reporter.

On a Dell XPS 13 9360 running 4.10.8-200.fc25.x86_64

The video output is still has a bad color mapping.

Also found this related bug report here: (still unresolved)
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=99137

See the image posted there for exactly the same issue seen here:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/attachment.cgi?id=128528

May be related to EDID reporting vs actual BPC sent.
