Description of problem: Dnf upgrade from Fedora 24 to 25, reboot continuously after: dnf system-upgrade reboot. I choose the last kernel of Fedora 24 after reboot, and during the system boot, just some moment after the "switching root", the shutdown procedure begins Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): How reproducible: When you are upgrading a system where / is as great as 30 Go, you dont spent time to restore tha previous backup and try it again ! Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3. Actual results: The upgrade cannot continue Expected results: The upgrade installation finish with all the downloaded Fedora 25 package stored in /var/lib/dnf Additional info: I dont know eactly which component of Fedora 24 id bugged
So the bug turnaround was: To start the system in single user mode, by adding the word single at the end of the line: linux /boot/vmlinuz..., for the choosen entry of boot grub, when you go in edit mode, at first grub step Once logged in in single usermode, the system propose to look at journalct -vx. I just do that piped in less # jpournalctl -xv | less and then searched carefully the last error message. I just see in particular some thing like: systemd-update-done.service has begun starting < date/hour> <myhostname> systemd-update-done[775]: Failed to update timestamp on /etc/.updated: Permission Denied ..... : Main Process exited ... Unit systemd-update-done.service has failed ==== So I edited /etc/sysconfig/selinux and set: SELINUX=permissive I also read, before rebooting, but after the SELINUX policy modification, the content of:/etc/.updated There is only comment"This file was created by systemd-update-done...." !!!! Then I rebooted the system in permissive mode, and then the system-upgrade installation of the downloaded Fedora 25 has started without any more problem. Of Course at the end of installation I set SELINUX in Enforcing mode Again ! And now my Fedora 25 is working !
Well in the description above, when I say " reboot continuously" means After the initial reboot processed by : # dnf system-upgrade reboot I just do nothing, grub choose the default kernel entry of Fedora 24, and when the dnf system-upgrade tried to continue his job, the system make a shutdown because of this fatal error described above ! So while first I was looking my PC during 10 mn, without doing nothing, I just see it rebooting ten times! Before I decides to try to find an issue !
Glad you solved it ;) We had a few reports like this. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 1398696 ***
