Description Ken 2017-03-15 06:59:20 UTC
Description of problem:

BSB Format (Nautical Chart Format) not enabled

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

gdal-2.1.2-5.fc25.x86_64

How reproducible:

Very

Steps to Reproduce:
1. "gdalinfo --formats | grep -i BSB" returns nothing
2.
3.

Actual results:

Nothing

Expected results:

BSB format info

Additional info:

Checking the gdal source code indicates that BSB is subject to US patent 5,727,090 and licenced to Maptech.

Checking the spec file shows "--without-bsb" to disable BSB.

Um ... any possibility of changing this ? The source code (gdal/frmts/bsb/bsb_read.c) indicates that the patent is only for *writing* BSB files.

I guess I could work around it with an environment variable : GDAL_DRIVER_PATH

Cheers

marking FutureFeature to avoid autoclose

Comment 2 Volker Fröhlich 2017-11-29 22:54:39 UTC
Like you said, the bsb driver is considered legal by the developers, as far as reading goes and that is all it does. It was me who added the --without-bsb. I guess I didn't read the comment thoroughly enough then. I think we can enable it.

For reference: Debian left it enabled.

Comment 3 Volker Fröhlich 2017-11-30 20:08:10 UTC
The ticket metadata says Rawhide, but I guess you want that in current releases too?

Comment 4 Ken 2017-11-30 22:29:13 UTC
Yes the current releases would be great.

Thanks !
