RHEL Engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on RHEL 6 through RHEL 9 to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs in the statuses "NEW", "ASSIGNED", and "POST" are being migrated throughout September 2023. Bugs of Red Hat partners with an assigned Engineering Partner Manager (EPM) are migrated in late September as per pre-agreed dates. Bugs against components "kernel", "kernel-rt", and "kpatch" are only migrated if still in "NEW" or "ASSIGNED". If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.

Description Renaud Métrich 2017-05-31 10:08:27 UTC
Description of problem:

Trying to implement fix for BZ 1457191, I found that when using the "-k <plugin>.<option>=<value>" command line option, and trying to specify a comma-separated list of values in the <value> field, the resulting value of a call to get_option_as_list(<option>) was only the first item of the list.

This is due to the list splitting automatically occurring during option parsing (OptionParserExtended class and "extend" keyword).
This "extend" feature is used for "-k".
Due to the splitting, only the first value of the list gets returned.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

sos-3.3-5.el7_3

How reproducible:

Always with attached reproducer (dummy.py plugin)

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install reproducer in /usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/sos/plugins/
2. Run:
    sosreport -o dummy --no-report --batch -k dummy.mylist="item1,item2" | grep dummy

Actual results:

# sosreport -o dummy --no-report --batch -k dummy.mylist="item1,item2" | grep dummy
unable to set option for disabled or non-existing plugin (item2)
[plugin:dummy] Item: item1
  Running 1/1: dummy...

Expected results:

1. no error ("unable to set option ...")
2. 2 items displayed ("item1" and "item2")

Since no plugins in the RHEL package actually try to do this (it's a well known limitation - the commas are treated as separators between arguments to separate plugins, rather than as embedded in argument values), it is better to file issues like this upstream where we can understand what you're trying to achieve and work out a solution:

Comment 4 Renaud Métrich 2017-05-31 11:58:26 UTC
Sorry, just created issue on GitHub: https://github.com/sosreport/sos/issues/1023

Comment 5 Pavel Moravec 2017-08-31 17:14:16 UTC
Re-scheduling to potential inclusion in RHEL 7.6. No plans to fix it in upcoming 7.5 until someone has a good idea how to resolve it (see upstream discussion).

Comment 6 Pavel Moravec 2018-04-02 13:41:47 UTC
no plans to fix it in 7.6, deferring to 7.7

Comment 8 Pavel Moravec 2020-11-04 21:00:44 UTC
This won't be fixed in RHEL7 that is already in maintenance phase.

Re-scheduling to RHEL8 where I hope we will resolve the brain-teaser behind this BZ.

Comment 10 RHEL Program Management 2020-12-01 07:28:52 UTC
After evaluating this issue, there are no plans to address it further or fix it in an upcoming release. Therefore, it is being closed. If plans change such that this issue will be fixed in an upcoming release, then the bug can be reopened.
