Description of problem:
Trying to read a sample chapter of a boot at pragprog.com, evince crashes as soon as you try to change pages, scroll, etc.

Attempt to read the document, scroll, click pages in thumbnail, etc.

Naturally, when run under gdb everything works Just Fine :(

did you try your gdb effort with
export G_SLICE=always-malloc
set ?

(i got nothing here either)
