Description of problem:
Using a Dell 3000 Display Link and connecting the USB 3 cable to connect the external monitor crashed the X11 session. After relogin to the shell it was back to normal and I could use both screens.

Interesting: a Dell machine again, IIUC: a crash similar to that one happened on my Dell (Alienware 17) machine, too - except I tried to connect a TV monitor via the mini dispay port:
