Applet reports that user needs to upgrade kernel even though it has been done

Description of problem:
User had to manually upgrade his kernel, and even though he did the rhn-applet is still telling him he needs to upgrade his kernel. When he actually launches up2date it recognizes that the kernel is updated and doesn't complain. Have tried
rm -fr /var/lib/rpm/__*
still does not work.

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Select the packages that neeed to be updated from the applet menu
Actual Results: Says that the kernel needs to be updated
Expected Results: should say nothing needs to be updated (if system is fully updated)
This bug is filed against RHEL 3, which is in maintenance phase.
During the maintenance phase, only security errata and select mission
critical bug fixes will be released for enterprise products. Since
this bug does not meet that criteria, it is now being closed.
