Description Pertti Hyppönen 2017-11-02 13:06:12 UTC
Description of problem:
Keyboard stopped working when libinput was upgraded from ver 1.8.3-1.fc26.x86_64 to 1.9.0-1.fc26.x86_64. When rebooting after "dnf upgrade" it was impossible to log in to the system, because keyboard didn't wrote anything to login password field.

The problem seems to be hardware related. I have HP EliteBook 8570w and Docking station HSTNN-I11X. Problem occurs only, when the laptop is docked and the power adapter is connected to docking station. After disconnecting the power adapter from docking station, the keyboard seems to begin work normally. Also power adapter connected to the laptop itself, the keyboard is working. But when power adapter is reconnected to docking station, keyboard stops writing anything ex. to terminal window.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
Fedora 26, libinput-1.9.0-1.fc26.x86_64
There has been no problem in earlier libinput versions.

How reproducible:
You should have HP EliteBook 8570w and docking station HSTNN-I11X and HP Power Adpter.

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Fedora 26 installed on HP EliteBook 8570w, laptop docked to HSTNN-I11X adn power adapter connected to docking station.
2.Upgrade libinput to 1.9.0-1.fc26.x86_64
3.Try to write something on laptop keyboard or external keyboard.

Actual results:
Keyboards do not write characters.

Expected results:
Keyboards should write typed text.

Additional info:
There was no peoblem using mouse.

I have the same problem on HP 8770W

for me, external keyboards work just fine
internal keyboard, when the docking station and power adapter are disconnected works just fine, but when connected to docking station:
1: before boot (e.g. in bios, in boot-loader, and even when the kernel is asking for disk encryption password, works just fine.
2: after boot: works just fine in virtual terminals (i.e. Ctrl+Alt+F3~12) (of course after switching to virtual terminals using external keyboard, and then trying to use the internal keyboard to write something ...) , but doesn't work in GDM login screen or gnome ... .

downgrading the libinput to 1.7.3-1.fc26 solves the problem, and upgrading it again to 1.9.0-1.fc26 will make it occur again.

I have exactly the same problem on HP 8470p. Same behavior than the 2 previous post.

Comment 3 czerny.jakub 2017-11-08 22:09:21 UTC
Is there any workaround for this problem?

downgrading the libinput to 1.7.3-1.fc26 solves the problem.

Same problem for me with HP EliteBook 850, except on F27. Downgrading from libinput-1.9.0-1.fc27.x86_64 to libinput-1.8.2-1.fc27.x86_64 fixed the problem. Oddly enough the trackpad and the keyboard wouldn't work, but the mouse buttons would.

Comment 6 Johnny M. 2017-11-18 16:04:51 UTC
I have the same issue on 2 HP notebooks:

HP Elitebook Folio 9470m (HP UltraSlim Dock 2013)
HP Elitebook 2560p (HP 2650 Docking Station)

When the laptop was connected to the dock and the dock was powered, the onboard keyboard would not work. The touchpad, however, did work for me on both devices. As soon as power was removed from the dock, or the laptop was removed from the dock, the onboard keyboard started to work again.

This is still an issue in libinput-1.9.2-1.fc28.x86_64 (rawhide).
I downgraded to libinput-1.8.2-1.fc27.x86_64 per a previous comment and the keyboard now works when docked.

Are there any logs or command outputs I could provide that would be helpful to diagnose this?

Reporting the same problem with following hardware:

HP EliteBook 840 G2 + HP UltraSlim Dock 2013. Both have been updated with latest firmware from HP website.

Tested with latest libinput-1.9.1-4.fc27.x86_64 and the problem is still there. The only workaround is with the reported downgrade to libinput-1.8.2-1.fc27.x86_64.

Tried booting and logging in before attaching it to the dock but it still "freezes" both keyboard and touchpad.

Removing it from the dock while being "frozen" made no change but attaching external mouse and keyboard directly to laptop when removed from dock works.

I have a very similar problem on an HP Elitebook Folio 1040 G1 with FC27. When plugging in an HP Dock Connector (P/N G7U78AA, a small dongle with ethernet and VGA ports), the keyboard immediately stops working. It starts working again as soon as I unplug it.

If I boot with the dongle plugged in, the keyboard works fine in grub/Windows, but *both* the trackpad and keyboard stop working at the login screen. If I then unplug it, both trackpad and keyboard work again. If I plug it back in again, the trackpad starts working normally, but the keyboard still stops responding.

Downgrading to libinput-1.8.2-1.fc27.x86_64 fixed the issue.

Hello,
Same problem with HP EliteBook 840 G1.
No touchpad or laptop keyboard works with libinput.x86_64 1.9.0-1.fc26.
Please increase the severity of this bug and let me know if you need more data to solve it.
Consider the keyboard works until login screen: I can input the disk luks password before the login screen appears.
Thanks.

Same issue with HP Omen 15t-5000IC laptop. Going from 1.8.2-1 from Fedora 27 live image to 1.9.2-1 via dnf update breaks keyboard input. Downgrading back to libinput-1.8.2-1.fc27.x86_64 fixed the issue.

Hello,

try update HP bios firmware to latest...

I had the same problem. No keyboard on the dock with libinput.x86_64 1.9.0-1.fc26 (reverted back to 1.8).

Yesterday I updated bios (trying solve another problem with graphics) and (out of curiosity) updated libinput too... And keyboard is working with the dock again...

HP EliteBook 8440p
old bios: (something from 2010)
actual (newest) bios: F.60 Rev.A (from 2015)

Hello
I already have the latest BIOS 68IAV ver. F.66, 07/13/2017. So there was no idea to try to update BIOS.

But a couple of days ago I red from The Hacker News,
https://thehackernews.com/2017/12/hp-laptop-keylogger.html?m=1

that there is a hidden keylogger in HP laptop Synaptics Touchpad driver and that there is a service pack available for this at HP
https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c05827409

The hidden keylogger is in 460 different HP models.

I have Windows 7 and Fedora 26 dual boot, so I installed HP service pack sp81892.exe in Windows, booted to Fedora and upgraded libinput to libinput-1.9.0-1.fc26.x86_64. Rebooted to Fedora and keyboard seems to work without problem, also when docked!!!!!!

Oh shit, what to say? Probably the keyboard has been writing to NSA or CIA instead of my screen? This is not the first time there has been hidden keyloggers in HP machines.

It seems, that solution of this bug is to update the HP Symantec Touchpad driver to avoid libinput conflict with the hidden keylogger.

Booted Windows to patch Synaptics with package from the above mentioned link and it made no change until I updated to the latest libinput (libinput-1.9.3-2.fc27.x86_64).

Everything works now as before. Funny as hell as it seams that firmware from Synaptic is being updated while HP claims it was a software error.

Comment 15 Fedora End Of Life 2018-05-03 08:17:36 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 26 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 26. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a Fedora 'version'
of '26'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora 26 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Comment 16 Fedora End Of Life 2018-05-29 11:43:26 UTC
Fedora 26 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2018-05-29. Fedora 26
is no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any
further security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.

I attached a USB keyboard and was able to get working on the problem. Using the USB keyboard to switch to tty2 got the laptop keyboard working again. Switching back to X caused it to stop responding again. For more details visit - https://www.pcsupportnumber.co.uk/hp-support-uk/

Hello,
I was getting the same problem with my Asus V221ICUK-BA039T desktop. I was not able to connect the keyboard with it. I was very stressed with this issue because it was disturbing my work a lot. Than I took help from the asus support team by just dialing the helpline number. For more information visit: https://www.pcsupportnumber.co.uk/asus-support/
