Description guilfordstuff 2018-05-30 14:04:10 UTC
Description of problem:
I stupidly sent a kill signal to powerdevil. After that I couldn't figure out how to restart. The System Settings->Power Management panel informed me that the power management service wasn't running and instructed me to configure/start it in what I think was Startup/Shutdown->Background Services. However, there is no listing for anything like "Powerdevil" or "Power Management". I suspect someone forgot to list it there. After that, I had to manually suspend the machine, which didn't actually work. It said it suspended, but it just suspended the display and continued running. Anyway, with the new systemd, I'm helpless to start/stop services. I have no idea where anything is located anymore.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

How reproducible:
I'm not doing it again, that's for sure. Reboot fixed it.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. kill -9 to powerdevil
2. Try to restart somehow
3.

Actual results:

Expected results:
It's a missing configuration so far as I can tell. Either that, or the instructions to the user need to be more specific where the control for this is located.

Services listed in systemsettings are mostly about *user* services, not system ones.

powerdevil is started via xdg autostart, /etc/xdg/autostart/powerdevil.desktop

This isn't a bug (closing), more a support issue (you shouldn't be killing random daemons unless you know what you're doing or have a note from your mom)

Look, I'm going to cut you a break because you're German or something, but the issue isn't with my inability to restart a random daemon, it's that THE INSTRUCTIONS GIVEN BY KDE TO FIX THE PROBLEM ARE INCORRECT. There's no point in telling people to go the the services dialog if that's not what they should do. Please change the error message to "you shouldn't be killing random daemons unless you know what you're doing or have a note from your mom" or submit the problem for fixing.

ALSO, "xdg autostart" is not an explanation about how to restart a daemon. So, thanks for playing, but you really shouldn't be interacting with the public if this is the sort of advice you give.

Do we need an alternative bugzilla where problems actually get solved? I'm sure3 as hell not submitting further bugs here if this is what happens.

As for the kde documentation, my apologies. This section,
"This module is a configuration tool for managing Power Management in Plasma. It is a configurator for the PowerDevil daemon, that you can start or stop from the Background Services module in System Settings."
is indeed now out-of-date and incorrect. I don't recall exactly when it was changed, but it is no longer started as a kde background service.

I'll take the issue to kde upstream to fix the docs ... probably simplest to simply omit the incorrect statement "... that you can start or stop from the Background Services module in System Settings." that's a technical detail that is not well-suited to user-facing documentation.

For a hint how XDG autostart works, please look at the text file,
/etc/xdg/autostart/powerdevil.desktop
and look for the Exec= key
if you want to (re)start it, run that command by hand (in a terminal/konsole or whatever).

Filed issue upstream,
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=396635
to amend/fix the documentation to be clearer.

I encourage you to correspond on our mailing list,
