Description Stephen E Clark 2005-08-01 19:49:30 UTC
Description of problem:
When cold booting the system hangs during the startup or shortly thereafter. If
I can force a reboot ctl-alt-del before the hang then the system will boot up
and be stable.

Also from cold boot if I append acpi=off pci=noacpi, usepirqmask to the boot
command line then the system will boot and not hang. The problem with this is my
sound will not work, the sound card won't generate interrupts.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
2.6.12-1.1398_FC4

How reproducible:
Always!

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Cold boot
2.
3.

Actual results:
System hangs

Expected results:
System continues running

Please try the latest errata kernel in updates-testing, as that has some ACPI
fixes which may help.

Comment 2 Stephen E Clark 2005-08-31 15:30:04 UTC
I was able to get everything working by compiling in the sound driver and using
2.6.13rc6.

I just this morning 8/31 tried 2.6.12-1.1447_FC4 and it hung while starting the
display manager - I had to power off to get out of the hang.

Comment 3 Dave Jones 2005-09-30 07:25:29 UTC
Mass update to all FC4 bugs:

An update has been released (2.6.13-1.1526_FC4) which rebases to a new upstream
kernel (2.6.13.2). As there were ~3500 changes upstream between this and the
previous kernel, it's possible your bug has been fixed already.

Please retest with this update, and update this bug if necessary.

Thanks.

Comment 5 Len Brown 2006-01-18 05:59:45 UTC
So is this working or failing with the latest kernel?

The difference between the success (warm reset)
and the failure (cold boot) is interesting
and suggest that checking for a BIOS update might make sense.

I assume that a reboot works fine and the issues are limited
to the cold boot from power-on case?

Hmmm, enabling K7/SSE in the failure case,
but not in the success case...

Success case starts off with IRQs 11,9,5 set to level
Failure case starts off with IRQs 11 set to level

Very strange to see LNKC disabled in the failure
case and enabled in the success case -- you would
think a warm and cold boot would give us this link
in the same state...

The success case uses what the BIOS gave us: IRQ5,
but the failure case also happens to choose IRQ5 for LNKC.

This is a mass-update to all currently open kernel bugs.

A new kernel update has been released (Version: 2.6.15-1.1830_FC4)
based upon a new upstream kernel release.

Please retest against this new kernel, as a large number of patches
go into each upstream release, possibly including changes that
may address this problem.

This bug has been placed in NEEDINFO_REPORTER state.
Due to the large volume of inactive bugs in bugzilla, if this bug is
still in this state in two weeks time, it will be closed.

Should this bug still be relevant after this period, the reporter
can reopen the bug at any time. Any other users on the Cc: list
of this bug can request that the bug be reopened by adding a
comment to the bug.

If this bug is a problem preventing you from installing the
release this version is filed against, please see bug 169613.

Thank you.

Comment 7 Stephen E Clark 2006-02-03 17:49:01 UTC
I tried 2.6.15-1.1830_FC4 unless I boot with acpi=off my laptop locks up. The
probelm with acpi=off is my sound doesn't work. IF I compile in sound I can boot
with out using acpi=off and then my laptop does not freeze and my sound will work.

Comment 8 Stephen E Clark 2006-02-11 23:38:19 UTC
I would close this. Using 2.6.15-1.1831_FC4 and booting with nousb everything
works OK. When I run HP's diags on my laptop it says my usb is not working
correctly,(not generating interrupts), this must be what is causing my system to
hang. Sorry for the erroneous report.
