The GNOME SIG has decided to retire the empathy package from Fedoras 30 and onwards with the blessings of its owner, Brian Pepple, due to bug 1654208. Both Empathy and its crucial dependency, Telepathy, have been unmaintained for years now. The GNOME SIG and the Workstation WG have been trying for a long time to remove the Telepathy dependency from as many packages as possible. Recently it was discovered (bug 1654208) that we either need to split out libfolks-telepathy.so into a folks-telepathy sub-package or retire Empathy which hard requires it. Given that empathy is an unmaintained, network facing application (the process separation of Telepathy is a mitigating factor), we decided to retire it instead of adding a sub-package to folks. Due to the loss of libfolks-telepathy.so from Fedora 30, empathy needs to be removed from end-user machines. Otherwise it is going to interfere with upgrades, and The most recent Empathy build in Koji is empathy-3.12.14-8.fc30
Done in fedora-obsolete-packages 31-1 and 30-29.
