RHEL Engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on RHEL 6 through RHEL 9 to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs in the statuses "NEW", "ASSIGNED", and "POST" are being migrated throughout September 2023. Bugs of Red Hat partners with an assigned Engineering Partner Manager (EPM) are migrated in late September as per pre-agreed dates. Bugs against components "kernel", "kernel-rt", and "kpatch" are only migrated if still in "NEW" or "ASSIGNED". If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.

Description Orion Poplawski 2020-06-22 23:09:14 UTC
Description of problem:

Please consider building libtar for EPEL8. If you are not interested in maintaining it in EPEL, please add me (FAS orion) as an admin on the package so that I can request the EPEL8 branch. Thanks.

Seems to build fine:

Comment 1 Kamil Dudka 2020-06-23 07:07:05 UTC
libtar cannot be built for EPEL-8 because it is in RHEL-8. This is technically a request to include libtar-devel into CRB repo as I understand it. Is there any customer case behind this request?

Comment 2 Orion Poplawski 2020-06-23 13:15:19 UTC
Ah, I missed that. I'm afraid I'm not a customer. I need it to build NetDRMS used to process JSOC data (http://jsoc.stanford.edu/), but I doubt any of the other JSOC sites are Red Hat customers either. I see that there is already a request for CentOS to provide it and I've linked to that here as well.

Thank you for adding the reference to the corresponding CentOS bug.

Comment 5 Kamil Dudka 2021-03-21 14:49:23 UTC
The libtar package is no longer maintained upstream. The last activity in the upstream git repository was in 2013. We are currently migrating off libtar (see bug #1917890 for details), so it is unlikely that Red Hat would ever want to support libtar in RHEL-8 CRB. I am closing this bug as WONTFIX. Although the package may theoretically appear in EPEL-9, I would discourage from using it.
