Description Ranjan Maitra 2020-09-09 18:59:51 UTC
Description of problem:

When using some actions of ggplot2 inside the JGR() package in R, the JGR window crashes on Fedora 32, but runs just fine with expected results on Windows

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

All java-openjdks available:

java-1.8.0-openjdk.x86_64-1:1.8.0.265.b01-1.fc32
java-11-openjdk.x86_64-1:11.0.8.10-2.fc32
java-latest-openjdk.x86_64-1:14.0.2.12-1.rolling.fc32

How reproducible:
Always.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. a. Install java-1.8.0-openjdk and java-1.8.0-openjdk-devel, R and curl-devel
   b. Go into R as administrator: sudo R.
   c. at the prompt, install.packages('JGR','Deducer') #choosing the 0-Cloud repo when prompted should be enough. Wait for installation to finish.
   d. Exit R.

2. a. Now go into R as mortal user.
   b. At the prompt, type:
      library(JGR)
      library(Deducer)
      JGR()
A jaguar figure and Window opens up (make take a few seconds). On the lower pane, of the window type
data(cars)

3. Go to the top pane.
  a. click on Plots -> Quick -> histogram.
Using the arrow, click to enter speed as 'variable' in the dialog box
     Press Run
  b. click on Plots -> Quick -> simple boxplot.
Using the arrow, click to enter speed as 'variable' in the dialog box
     Press Run

Actual results:

a. A new window opens and a histogram figure appears.
b. A new window opens and crashes the JGR window.

Expected results:

a. As happens in the actual results.
b. A new window should openand a boxplot figure should appear.

Additional info:

Here is the output of sudo tail -f /var/log/messages for the two scenarios:

Happy to provide more information and test as needed. This bug is a show-stopper, and confirmed by George White on the users mailing list to not happen with Ubuntu 20.04. Also confirmed by me not to happen with Windows and MacOS (though they use proprietary java).

Comment 2 Fedora Program Management 2021-04-29 16:49:24 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 32 is nearing its end of life.
Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 32 on 2021-05-25.
It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer
maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a
Fedora 'version' of '32'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora 32 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Comment 3 Ben Cotton 2021-05-25 17:13:02 UTC
Fedora 32 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2021-05-25. Fedora 32 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
