Document URL: https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_satellite/6.8/html-single/managing_hosts/index#host-management-without-goferd-and-katello-agent_managing-hosts Section Number and Name: Chapter 12. Host Management Without Goferd and Katello Agent Describe the issue: This section states that management of hosts without katello-agent requires package katello-host-tools, which uploads the profiles of installed packages and enabled repositories in the host to the Satellite. As per "Explanation" in https://bugzilla.redhat.com/1742208#c0 , modern builds of subscription-manager available for RHEL 7 and RHEL 8 also upload the profiles of installed packages and enabled repositories in the host to the Satellite. See http://post-office.corp.redhat.com/archives/satellite6-list/2020-November/msg00041.html as well. If subscription-manager is configured with package_profile_on_trans=1 in /etc/rhsm/rhsm.conf , katello-host-tools disables itself in favour of subscription-manager. Suggestions for improvement: The document should mention the possibility of not installing katello-host-tools, which is not required if a modern enough subscription-manager is configured appropriately. This also removes the need to enable the Satellite Tools repository in the Satellite hosts, and the need to change it on every Satellite host when a new Satellite release is available. Additional information: The document should mention that katello-host-tools is still required as a dependency for katello-host-tools-tracer if tracer functionality is desired.
We need more details should be added in the latest version of the satellite documentation for managing the host. 1) Do we need katello-host-tools on the latest version? 2) Do we need katello-host-tools when we have the latest version of subscription-manager installed? 3) when we can remove katello-host-tools or in which scenario? 4) does it need on RHEL 6/7/8 5) Is there any plan of depreciating katello-host-tools in future?
