Description Neal Gompa 2021-04-09 17:59:22 UTC
Description of problem:
Currently, Xwayland does not support hardware acceleration on the NVIDIA proprietary driver. The upcoming NVIDIA 470 driver series will use the recently-merged support[1], and we should have this in Fedora 34 GA so that it works when the driver is released, even with GA when preloaded on machines.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
21.1.0-1.fc34

Comment 2 Fedora Blocker Bugs Application 2021-04-09 18:03:33 UTC
Proposed as a Freeze Exception for 34-final by Fedora user ngompa using the blocker tracking app because:

This would make it good for out of the box Wayland support with the upcoming NVIDIA driver, especially with preloaded machines.

Comment 3 Olivier Fourdan 2021-04-12 11:40:16 UTC
As stated in the PR, we have no way to test those patches because the closed source driver they enable is not yet available from NVidia, therefore a freeze exception for this seems somehow risky.

A safer approach would be to wait at least for a beta release of the driver from NVidia to make sure those patches work as expected.

Comment 4 František Zatloukal 2021-04-12 17:47:47 UTC
Discussed during the 2021-04-12 blocker review meeting: [1]

The decision to classify this bug as an RejectedFreezeException was made:

"This is a lot of change for the benefit solely of a proprietary driver. The cost/benefit doesn't seem worth it at this point."
