Created attachment 1773841 [details] This shows the text of the SELinux alert "details" of my most recent run of totem_video_thumbnailer. Description of problem: Sometimes, when launching caja, SELinux alerts pop up. I cannot consistently reproduce the problem, but it does seem to occur for the first launch of caja after booting up. Often, in caja, immediately after renaming a video file, SELinux alerts pop up. But the rename works. I cannot consistently reproduce the problem, but it seems to occur more often that not. Often, in a terminal, when I run totem-video-thumbnailer, SELinux alerts pop up and the command aborts. I cannot consistently reproduce the problem, but it seems to occur more often that not. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): caja: version 1.24.1; release 1.fc33. totem-video-thumbnailer: unknown. How reproducible: Not consistently, but seemingly always after rebooting. Steps to Reproduce: Case A. 1. reboot; login to GNOME. 2. launch caja. 3. in caja, rename a video file. Case B. 1. reboot; login to GNOME. 2. in a terminal, try to generate a thumbnail for a video file by using the totem-video-thumbnailer command. Actual results: Case A. (step 2) SELinux alerts pop up. (step 3) SELinux alerts pop up. The rename works, Case B. (step 2) SELinux alerts pop up. The totem-video-thumbnailer command aborts. Expected results: No SELinix alerts. The rename should work (it does). A thumbnail image file should be generated for the video. Additional info: * This started showing up after upgrading to Fedora-33. * I have not tried caja or totem-video-thumbnailer in any non_GNOME desktop. * I have not experienced the caja problems when using Files (nautilus). * These problems were discussed in the Fedora users list, in the thread "puzzling SELinux alert.". * I experience these problems both when logging in to "GNOME" and "GNOME on Xorg". However, I strongly suspect "GNOME" is not using wayland. * I don't know whether the "component" for this bug should be SELinux, caja, totem-video-thumbnailer, or something else. Those who manage these bugs should feel free to change that field appropriately.
Created attachment 1773842 [details] This shows the the totem-video-thumbnailer output, plus the commands (with their results) run trying to diagnose the problem.
Created attachment 1773843 [details] This shows the output from running an ausearch after the SELinux alerts pop up on the totem-video-thumbnailer command.
I have additional diagnostic output files, but they're huge. These are: * the output file produced by running strace on totem-video-thumbnailer. * the results of grepping that strace output file for "2272" (the process ID for the totem-video-thumbnailer command run), "open", and "stat". Let me know if you want them. The reason for trying totem-video-thumbnailer is that SELinux indicated that caja was calling it.
The SELinux alerts stopped on Thursday April 29. That would have been when I did weekly patches ("dnf upgrade"). I also did weekly patches on Thursday, May 06. Since the alerts did not start showing up again, I'm now confident they're really fixed.
This message is a reminder that Fedora 33 is nearing its end of life. Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 33 on 2021-11-30. It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a Fedora 'version' of '33'. Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version. Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not able to fix it before Fedora 33 is end of life. If you would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above. Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete.
Fedora 33 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2021-11-30. Fedora 33 is no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug. If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this bug. Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
