Using dmidecode-2.2 from kernel-utils on ia64 segfaults on the output. This is always reproducible. The version checked is : kernel-utils-2.4-13.1.83 In the dmidecode.c, particularly in static const char *dmi_string(struct dmi_header *dm, u8 s), one declaration is made by "static str_tmp" that will lately be associated to a pointer; therefore the higher bits might be wiped out. Attached you will find a patch that fixes the problem.

We see this on both of our Unisys IA64 platforms.
This request was evaluated by Red Hat Product Management for inclusion in a Red Hat Enterprise Linux maintenance release. Product Management has requested further review of this request by Red Hat Engineering, for potential inclusion in a Red Hat Enterprise Linux Update release for currently deployed products. This request is not yet committed for inclusion in an Update release.
Fix appears correct, bug report appears correct.
Even better looking at the other fixes might be to pull in 2.8
