On RedHat 7.0 with kde installed form binary packages downloaded from
www.kde.org I can login as root but not as ordinary user. It says to check
if the kcopserver is running. And it is running

Update KDE to the version found in rawhide.
It fixes a number of issues the original KDE 2.0 had.
