Description Andy Heath 2021-11-03 12:42:06 UTC
Description of problem: After the upgrade to Fedora 35 using the upgrade tool and following the documentation when my system was rebooted I was unable to login as a normal user. When I was able to login as root, I saw that the content of the /home/user directory was root:root.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): 35

How reproducible: Follow the upgrade guide (https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/quick-docs/dnf-system-upgrade/) but this may be a one off and not happen again.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. sudo dnf upgrade --refresh
2. sudo dnf install dnf-plugin-system-upgrade
3. sudo dnf system-upgrade download --releasever=35
4. sudo dnf system-upgrade reboot

Actual results: Was unable to login with my user account, even after unlocking the account and resetting the password.

Expected results: Login to the user like normal with no issues.

Additional info: Had to chown -R user:user /home/user then in GNOME set the user account to auto login one time before all started working again.

I understand your problem but we cannot do much. DNF it self is not changing ownership of home directory. I suggest the problem is related to one of updated packages during system-upgrade. To see details about system-upgrade transaction, you can use `dnf system-upgrade log`, then `dnf system-upgrade log --number=<number>` (in my case it was 1), or from `dnf history` pick the right transaction number and then use `dnf history info <number>`. With `dnf system-upgrade log --number=<number>` you can see all output during transaction (I recommend to search for dnf `/dnf`) therefore there can be some hint related to your problem.

I know it involves thousands of packages but there is no other way I guess. When you will have a candidate, please change the component to the suspicious package. I am changing the component to the distribution, because I do not have a better option right now.

system-upgrade log

I could not find anything that directly changes my home permission, but I added my system-upgrade log

This message is a reminder that Fedora Linux 35 is nearing its end of life.
Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora Linux 35 on 2022-12-13.
It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer
maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a
'version' of '35'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, change the 'version'
to a later Fedora Linux version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora Linux 35 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora Linux, you are encouraged to change the 'version' to a later version
prior to this bug being closed.

Comment 4 Ben Cotton 2022-12-13 15:45:37 UTC
Fedora Linux 35 entered end-of-life (EOL) status on 2022-12-13.

Fedora Linux 35 is no longer maintained, which means that it
will not receive any further security or bug fix updates. As a result we
are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of Fedora Linux
please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. Note that the version
field may be hidden. Click the "Show advanced fields" button if you do not see
the version field.

If you are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against an
active release.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
