RHEL Engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on RHEL 6 through RHEL 9 to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs in the statuses "NEW", "ASSIGNED", and "POST" are being migrated throughout September 2023. Bugs of Red Hat partners with an assigned Engineering Partner Manager (EPM) are migrated in late September as per pre-agreed dates. Bugs against components "kernel", "kernel-rt", and "kpatch" are only migrated if still in "NEW" or "ASSIGNED". If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.

Comment 2 Karl Hastings 2021-11-11 16:32:01 UTC
And does it truly only increase the amount of memory needed if the image is on an NFS server? It makes sense that it wouldn't increase the memory required when served up by HTTPS because the system had to copy it into memory in any event. But, why not when the image is on local media, like a CD, or USB storage device?

Comment 3 Lukáš Nykrýn 2021-11-12 11:52:25 UTC
This option vasically does
 dd if=$SQUASHED of=/run/initramfs/squashed.img bs=512 2> /dev/null

So my suggestion is just to drop the part about NFS

Using this option when the stage 2 image is on an NFS server increases the minimum required memory by the size of the image by roughly 500 MiB.
->
Using this option increases the minimum required memory by the size of the image by roughly 500 MiB.

Comment 5 Karl Hastings 2021-11-12 14:46:48 UTC
There is still a *slight* grammar issue with "by the size of the image by roughly 500 MiB."

I would phrase it like:
~~~
Using this option increases the minimum required memory by the size of the stage 2 image (roughly 500 MiB).
~~~

But that number appears to be wrong. /images/install.img seems to change between releases. In RHEL 8.1 it was 499.1MB, in 8.5 it is 706.9MB, in 9.0beta it is 637.4MB. Is it worth it to even put a number here, when it changes?

How about:
~~~
If the rd.live.ram option is specified, the stage 2 image (images/install.img) is copied into RAM. This increases the memory required for installation by the size of the image.
~~~

That conveys the correct information, points customers where to look to obtain the correct size, but doesn't provide information that will become stale, or have to be updated with every release.
