Description Aldo Necci 2021-12-10 10:40:51 UTC
ypbind, ypserv, yp-tools and nss_nis are missing in CentOS Stream 9. Is there someone who may branch and build them?

Comment 1 Petr Kubat 2021-12-10 12:48:00 UTC
Hi Aldo,
thanks for the bug report!

The NIS rpms have been deprecated in current RHEL versions and will be removed in RHEL9. As Centos Stream 9 is essentially a distribution that will eventually become RHEL9, it makes sense the rpms are no longer present.

Comment 2 Patrick J. LoPresti 2022-05-13 22:06:08 UTC
So if we have an NIS infrastructure we have to move away from Red Hat?

Or are there enough hooks for some third party to fill in the gap?

Comment 3 Petr Kubat 2022-05-16 07:43:37 UTC
Hi Patrick,

there is no direct alternative with fully compatible features, because the Network Information Service (NIS) technology is based an outdated design patterns no longer considered secure. The alternatives are LDAP and for some use cases Kerberos.
I cannot speak for third parties, but Red Hat recommends moving to LDAP (https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_enterprise_linux/8/html/configuring_and_managing_identity_management/assembly_migrating-from-nis-to-identity-management_configuring-and-managing-idm).
