Description of problem: RHEL 8.6 updated mpich to version 3.4.2 and openmpi to 1:4.1.1 (Epoch raise). Petsc depends on older versions of these packages. petsc-mpich requires mpich(x86-64) = 0:3.4.1 petsc-openmpi-devel requires openmpi-devel(x86-64) = 0:4.1.1 This causes an update to fail or a downgrade to older versions of mpich and openmpi (+ dependent packages). Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): petsc-3.16.0-4.el8 How reproducible: always Steps to Reproduce: 1.yum -y install openmpi openmpi-devel mpich Package openmpi-1:4.1.1-3.el8.x86_64 is already installed. Package openmpi-devel-1:4.1.1-3.el8.x86_64 is already installed. Package mpich-3.4.2-1.el8.x86_64 is already installed. Dependencies resolved. Nothing to do. Complete! 2. yum install petsc-mpich petsc-openmpi-devel [...] Downgrading: mpich x86_64 3.4.1-1.el8 rhel-8-for-x86_64-appstream-rpms 2.3 M mpich-devel x86_64 3.4.1-1.el8 rhel-8-for-x86_64-appstream-rpms 614 k openmpi x86_64 4.1.1-2.el8 rhel-8-for-x86_64-appstream-rpms 2.9 M openmpi-devel x86_64 4.1.1-2.el8 rhel-8-for-x86_64-appstream-rpms 1.2 M 3. Actual results: mpich and openmpi are downgraded to older versions Expected results: No downgrade Additional info: Is the openmpi epoch change RHEL 8 only ? It might affect other packages.
