on Dell Optiplex GX110 and Precision Workstation 220: both using the 
i810_audio line in the /etc/modules.conf

in Gnome: when using "play" to play yahoo.wav I can only hear the "ya" and 
not the "hoo".  startup1.wav plays fine.  When using sound recorder to play 
yahoo for 3 times (and can hear the entire yahoo) the process "esd" did not 
get unloaded and will not be able to play any other sound.
in KDE: all the for-mentioned in Gnome works fine.

Quake on the other hand would run without sound.  Here is the output from 
running quake3 at the command line.

esd shouldn't get unloaded. What do you mean by 'will not be able to play
other sound'?

The play button on sound recorder became grayed-out and cannot run any option 
on sound recorder at all.  I cannot choose to open new files to play.

Working as expected in kernel 2.2.17-8.  Also this semms to be similar to bug# 
20653.  Both may be closed.
