So I started to look into this today and I quickly realized, it's not really something we should fix from the GDM side. The session controller is either mutter or the X server depending on if this is a wayland or Xorg session, so the fix should be in mutter and Xorg.

I'll see what I can come up for display servers but we've kind of run out of runway for 8.8. I'm going to defer to 8.9
