mkinitrd uses remoteip=$(host $remote | awk '/ address / { print $4 }') to get NFS server IP. This implies DNS lookup, but the NFS server isn't necessarily in DNS, it can e.g. be an /etc/hosts name, or LDAP or some other service providing the name. getent hosts $remote or getent ahosts $remote will print the IPs in the first column (getent hosts for names is essentially gethostbyname2 (..., AF_INET6) follwed by gethostbyname2 (..., AF_INET) if the former failed, while getent ahosts is getaddrinfo).
