Description Dave Russell 2006-12-02 17:34:52 UTC
Description of problem:

Following recent updates (unfortunately not sure exactly which ones caused this)
my machine no longer has any display when using the radeon driver.

The machine boots, I see the first boot, then the virtual terminal, but I never
see the X login prompt, at this point I am unable to switch to a VT, so I assume
that the machine has locked hard at this point.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

I've listed most of the xorg rpms (minus inappropriate drv rpms)

xorg-x11-twm-1.0.1-3.1
xorg-x11-fonts-100dpi-7.1-2
xorg-x11-xkb-utils-1.0.2-2.1
xorg-x11-xauth-1.0.1-2.1
xorg-x11-utils-7.1-2.fc6
xorg-x11-fonts-base-7.1-2
xorg-x11-fonts-Type1-7.1-2
xorg-x11-xinit-1.0.2-15.fc6
xorg-x11-drv-ati-6.6.3-1.fc6
xorg-x11-font-utils-7.1-2
xorg-x11-server-utils-7.1-4.fc6
xorg-x11-drv-vesa-1.2.1-4
xorg-x11-xfs-1.0.2-3.1
xorg-x11-fonts-ISO8859-1-75dpi-7.1-2
xorg-x11-drivers-7.1-3
xorg-x11-apps-7.1-3.fc6
xorg-x11-fonts-misc-7.1-2

How reproducible:

Every time :o(

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Fresh install of FC6 (no upgrade and no ATI fglrx binary drivers ever installed)
2. X with the radeon driver works
3. update to the latest errata with "yum update -y"
5. Reboot and watch X fail to start

Actual results:

No x display using the radeon driver. It is possible to get a display using the
vesa driver, but it does not support the resolution of my widescreen monitor.

Expected results:

Should have a display.

Additional info:

will attach xorg logs, lspci and anything else that could be useful.

Forgot to mention:
xorg-x11-drv-ati-6.6.3-1.fc6

Am going to try updating xorg-x11-drv-ati from rawhide (plus deps)

Will also try rawhide kernel if still no change.

Comment 6 Dave Russell 2006-12-03 10:19:03 UTC
Have updated the packages listed below from rawhide:

=============================================================================
 Package Arch Version Repository Size
=============================================================================
Updating:
 xorg-x11-drv-ati i386 6.6.3-1.fc7 development 345 k
 xorg-x11-server-Xorg i386 1.1.1-54.fc7 development 3.0 M

No rawhide kernel available at this time.

Take a look in your /var/log/messages for avc messages, or try disabling SELinux
with system-config-securitylevel.

Comment 13 Bastien Nocera 2006-12-05 10:07:39 UTC
Apparently, SELinux wasn't enabled.

I asked for the radeon DRI to be disabled, adding the line:
alias radeon off
to /etc/modprobe.conf and rebooting

Comment 14 Dave Russell 2006-12-05 10:11:19 UTC
[root@luggage ~]# sestatus
SELinux status: disabled
[root@luggage ~]#

It's not selinux, and from the look of it, an aborted lockup has this footprint
in /var/log/messages

Putting on needinfo re comment #13

Comment 16 Dave Russell 2006-12-09 16:38:04 UTC
Yup, that gets me a display.

So, what has changed in the last ~4-5 weeks that would have broken DRI with the
radeon driver?

Comment 17 Dave Russell 2007-02-02 14:39:02 UTC
Well I've ditched this hardware (never did completely solve the problem) and
opened up a new bug, with widescreen displays on intel gfx hardware.

Marking this bug as closed (deferred) due to no longer having the hardware to test.
