This happened on re-boot of a hung system. It booted to the LUKS screen and then once I entered the passphrase it booted allowing me to login. After login and connecting external monitors it hung again. I had to hard reboot to get the system to allow me to login without external monitors attached. After login I could attach the monitors and close the laptop lid.
