See summary. In the gnome-extensions application i read: The extension is incompatible with the current GNOME version This is only half true. Simply the version of gnome shell (44) : rpm -q gnome-shell gnome-shell-44.2-1.fc38.x86_64 is not listed in /usr/share/gnome-shell/extensions/vertical-overview.com/metadata.json : { "name" : "Vertical overview", "description" : "Bringing back vertically stacked workspaces", "original-author": "rens.althuis", "shell-version" : [ "42", "43" ], "url" : "https://github.com/RensAlthuis/vertical-overview", "uuid" : "vertical-overview.com", "version" : "9" } The problem can easily be fixed by adding 44 to this file. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Start Gnome 2. Start gnome-extensions-app 3. Check the entry for Vertical overview Actual Results: vertical overview does not work Expected Results: vertical overview works See details
Please update this extension. Upstream might need to be poked to implement what is discussed in https://github.com/RensAlthuis/vertical-overview/issues/122 Thanks!
Upstream has stated they "do not have the time to properly maintain this extension". They also recommend the v-shell extension, which is packaged as gnome-shell-extension-vertical-workspaces. Regardless of that, thanks for linking to that issue. Because of that I found the related pull request (ironically from the v-shell author), and will include it as a patch in the gnome-shell-extension-vertical-overview package.

Can confirm it works in F38. Thanks a lot! Maybe good idea to remove it for F39 or later when the author thinks it is superseded by another extension?
Thank you for adding some more gnome-shell version numbers to come :-)
> Maybe good idea to remove it for F39 or later when the author thinks it is superseded by another extension? Yeah I'm considering this. It's difficult to depend on unmerged pull requests that I can turn into patches to keep things compatible. Once GNOME 45 hits rawhide, I'll check if it breaks this extension again and make a judgement call then.
