I'm closing this as NOTABUG because: my ~/.hplip.conf contained the "--standalone" option to hp-sendfax, probably from an earlier version. Removing the ~/.hplip.conf and running hp-sendfax results in creating a new ~/.hplip.conf that does not have that option.
