could we maintain a lookup list of install CD volume IDs to OS mappings so that
the new VM dialogs could auto-select the OS for you?

for example, 

XP_PRO_SP2_ENG is Windows XP

Hi, thanks for the feature request, however I don't think this is something we
want in virt-manager. It would be completely unmaintainable, requiring constant
updates to be useful, and only confusing users if their cd was not in the table
and they had to choose the values themselves. It's also of limited use, saving
two clicks at best. I'm going to have to close this WONTFIX.
