After initial installation, during bootup, there is an error
stating that the directory /initrd is missing.

What is the hardware configuration of the box?

The system is an HP E60 and has a ICP-Vortex SCSI controller running 4
18 gigabyte harddrives in RAID 5 configuration. Linux 2.2.5-15 build.

Once I made the /initrd directory the problme went away

Should be fixed in the next release. The ICP controller was not
properly supported by mkinitrd - thuis the problems you were seeing.
That is because the ICP devices have their own subdir within /dev
