Description Sonal Santan 2008-06-24 11:05:04 UTC
Description of problem:
Since upgrading to F9, VLC frequently stutters when playing music. I have
uninstalled pulse audio and friends in order to isolate the problem. However the
issue is still there even when pulse audio is removed from the system. My VLC is
configured to use "ALSA audio output" and the ALSA Device Name is "Intel ICH6:
Intel ICH6 (hw:0,0)"

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
kernel-2.6.25.6-55.fc9.i686
vlc-0.8.6h-1.lvn9.i386
alsa-lib-1.0.16-3.fc9.i386
alsa-utils-1.0.16-3.fc9.i386

How reproducible:
Consistently reproduceble

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Start VLC
2. Wait for two minutes and leave the machine alone.
3. Now go back and move the mouse

Actual results:
The machine freezes for a second or two when I move the mouse and audio stutters.
The same behaviour is observed when I connect or disconnect the power supply
while the VLC or any other audio application is running.
Another point to note is that this is not confined to VLC. other audio
applications also show the same broken behavior, e.g. Adobe flash player
(Youtube video)

Expected results:

Comment 1 Sonal Santan 2008-06-25 15:04:25 UTC
This appears to be a more general problem with responsiveness of F9. If I leave
the machine unused for more than a few minutes and later come back and move the
mouse, the machine freezes for a second or so before responding. I have observed
that the load increases to 100% during that small period.

Comment 2 Dave Jones 2008-06-30 20:38:23 UTC
is this still happening with all the latest updates ? The thing that jumps to
mind is that until the latest update, firefox was doing excessive fsync's
causing lots of disk writeout. If you had that running at the time, that would
explain it.

Comment 3 Sonal Santan 2008-07-01 16:21:58 UTC
I have all the updates applied. However the problem still persists.
Also I can reproduce the problem even when Firefox is not running, hence it is
likely not an fsync issue.

Comment 4 Bug Zapper 2009-06-10 01:45:07 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 9 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 30 (thirty) days from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 9. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora
'version' of '9'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 9's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 9 is end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora please change the 'version' of this
bug to the applicable version. If you are unable to change the version,
please add a comment here and someone will do it for you.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/HouseKeeping

Comment 5 Bug Zapper 2009-07-14 15:51:22 UTC
Fedora 9 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2009-07-10. Fedora 9 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
