Additional info: I understand this is probably a GL error, but I'll start with listing it as a FlightGear problem first and let someone else make that decision. I'm running this on a laptop with an Nvidia video card.
Can you run glxinfo from command line ? The initial error (Error: glXCreateContext failed) seems to be caused by a problem with glxinfo to tell if direct rendering is enabled.

I think you should fix the installation of your nvidia driver, until glxinfo displays something like that : $ glxinfo | head -5 name of display: :0.0 display: :0 screen: 0 direct rendering: Yes server glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation server glx version string: 1.4 The third line is important, because the value for direct rendering is tested by the opengl-game-functions.sh wrapper script, to allow an openGL game to start or not. And a broken nvidia driver installation may likely be the cause of your problem with FlightGear.
I was going to say that I am not aware of any problem with my nvidia driver. Its straight from the rpmfusion repo. And that everything other than this seems to work fine. So I gathered a whole bunch of information (which I have included below) that was going to be for you. And then I looked in /var/log/xorg.0.log and found this: ============================================================== X.Org X Server 1.5.3 Release Date: 5 November 2008 X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0 Build Operating System: Linux 2.6.18-92.1.10.el5 i686 Current Operating System: Linux localhost.localdomain 2.6.27.5-117.fc10.i686 #1 SMP Tue Nov 18 12:19:59 EST 2008 i686 Build Date: 16 November 2008 08:29:02PM Build ID: xorg-x11-server 1.5.3-5.fc10 Before reporting problems, check http://wiki.x.org to make sure that you have the latest version. I'll start a new bug somewhere for my nvidia problem. This issue has been resolved. I'll share the solution in case someone else comes on here trying to solve the same problem. Basically, the following needs to be present in the xorg.conf file: ... Section "Files" ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/nvidia" ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules" EndSection ... The rpmfusion people say that users should know to tweak the xorg.conf file this way. I reported the problem to them here: https://bugzilla.rpmfusion.org/show_bug.cgi?id=197
ok. closing the bug as per comment #5
